During this time, she has served in many capacities from Nurse Anesthesia Department Head, Director of a School of Nurse Anesthesia and NAMe’s Chair of the Board. At present, she is the Retirement Administrator for NAMe and serves as Eastern Maine Medical Center’s (EMMC) Clinical Coordinator for the School of Nurse Anesthesia in affiliation with the University of New England (UNE). She developed and assists the pediatric dental fellows with regard to their anesthesia rotation. She is the Chief of a small dental clinic that serves adult patients. With her constant love of education, she serves as one of the education coordinators for the Department of Anesthesia at EMMC.

Outside of NAMe business, Susan is a part time anesthesia faculty member for UNE where she has taught various courses and assists with simulation. In addition, she has worked diligently to gain approval from the AANA Council on Accreditation and the State of Maine Higher Education Department to commence a Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice at UNE. Both of these goals have been achieved and the program is now waiting for final approval from the University’s President and Board of Directors.

Active in her Maine state nurse anesthesia association, she has served as a Board member, Treasurer and Secretary. Currently, she is a Board Member and the MeANA Public Relations Co-chair which has won the AANA National Public Relations award three times over the past 10 years, most recently 2012. She has been a guest speaker for both MeANA and other nursing organizations in our state, such as the Perioperative Nurses Organization.

Always a lifelong learner, Susan received her Doctorate from Rush University, Chicago Illinois in 2009. Over the years, she has received many personal awards including the Agatha Hodges Award from Columbia University ( her anesthesia alma mater), Illinois Advanced Practice Nurses Award and the AANA Research Fellowship Award. She also has presented several posters at the AANA National Conventions.

Susan has two grown children both in undergraduate programs. She and her husband Mark of 25 years are looking forward to retiring in the future to their lovely home in Deer Isle, Maine.
